Background

Gorgeous Jack came to us from a racing background He was adopted from us shortly after but has unfortunately returned to our care as he exhibited resource guarding behaviours (that had been identified in foster care) in his home, particularly directed towards the male adopter.

Character

We have been provided quite a bit of assessment information for Jack from his Foster Carer and most recent adopter, so unlike some of the stray dogs that we take in, we have quite a few details about Jacks.

Jack has proven to be a very affectionate and cuddly boy – he now loves nothing more than cuddling up to his people and has a very gentle and calm nature.

Although he is not a big fan of his harness, he really looks forward to his walks! He is social and curious and walks well on a lead. As with all sighthounds, he does require some coaxing to move on after a squirrel sighting, but he does not pull or lunge on the lead.

Jack is highly intelligent and incredibly food-motivated, which makes training an absolute pleasure! He already knows ”leave it”, ”bed”, “no” ”wait, ”off” and has just started learning ”paw”.

We can only assume that Jack was not treated well when he was used as a racing hound, and he still shows some of the emotional and physical scars of his past.
He becomes fearful when he feels his space is being encroached, such as leaning or stepping over him in his bed,

Jack has not lived in home before and so finds the concept of ‘human food’ absolutely fanstastic! He has been known to sneak a little morsel when the opportunity presents itself, so his new family would need to bear that in mind and keep human food out of his reach. Jack’s foster family spent time working on the ”leave it” command and Jack will willingly give up the stolen morsel when swapped for a treat.

Jack to become fairly precious about his resources like food and comfortable spaces. He does not like to share these luxuries with other household pets, and so would be happiest as an only dog.
Also for this reason, he would be best placed in an adult only home who can accommodate this routine.

He sometimes steals the odd inanimate object, mind your slippers! Items are never chewed or damaged and we think he may just be playing hide and seek with you! Again, consistency with the ‘leave it’ and treat command makes retrieving items a smooth transition and wards off any potential resource guarding.

Jack sleeps well in his designated spot overnight, he settles immediately and sleeps through the night.

Type of home

Jack would suit a dog-savvy household that want the loyal and relaxed company that a greyhound can provide. He wouldn’t mind an active home and likes to follow people around to see what they are up to.

He just loves to stretch out on the sofa and have a nap or chew on his toys.

Jack travels very well in the car, although does require to be clipped in so that he doesn’t sneak his way onto the driver’s lap.

Outside of a home environment, Jack is very good with dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes and is used to spending time with them. He recently attended a playdate where young puppies were climbing him and licking his face and he remained calm and gentle.

Jack adores children! On a recent introduction, he followed the children around the field and enjoyed constant cuddles with them!

Jack is not cat tested but due to his racing background, his attention on walks and being a sighthound breed, he would not be suited to a home with cats or small furries.

Jack is on his way to being the most perfect companion and we so hope that the right family are out there for this incredible boy!
