Background – Louie came to us after serving his 7 days in a Welsh Pound. He went straight into a caring foster home. He was adopted shortly afterwards but unfortunately found himself back under our care after proving to be an unsuitable match for both parties.
Character –
This right here, is a cheeky chappy! Yorkies are intelligent, loyal and exude everything terrier, and Schnauzers are fun-loving, affectionate and bring all the attitude. Louie contains all the fun and mischief synonymous with his breed mix!
Louie is very inquisitive in the home and out on his walks.
He absolutely loves going on his walkies and gets very excited when he sees his harness being brought out. His foster mum practised her rugby skills to tackle his excited little body into his harness at first, but he learned quickly that sitting still would speed up the ‘walkies ‘process!
The same enthusiasm can be seen at meal times, but he will offer you a sit for his food bowl like a good boy.
It’s possible that Louie struggled to get regular meals or a comfy bed before he ended up at the pound, so understandably he can be a little possessive of his high-value items like beds and treats. His most recent homes worked alongside our training team to show Louie that no one will take away his creature comforts and he is in safe hands now. With regular positive reinforcement, we are sure this boy will get better at sharing!
Louie loves his people and company but is particular about how and when you stroke him when he is relaxing at home. He will vocally let you know when he does not want to share his space with you.
Louie lived with another resident dog in his foster home and they did not pay much attention to each other unless she approached Louie’s high-value items- where she got a bit of a telling off from him.
He has been really polite whilst meeting dogs and children when out and about on walks, although a little nervous of strangers at first.
He is confident on pavement walks alongside traffic and in busy environments like pubs and cafes.
Louis expresses his terrier-ratter DNA with a high chase drive, which he exhibits when he sees birds and small furries whilst out on walks and when he sneaks a peak through windows at home. This behaviour is slightly calmer when he has been well exercised and stimulated.
He is as good as gold at vet visits and has been known to enjoy being brushed by his people.
Overall, he settled well in a household and made himself quite comfortable in a very short time (see pictures).
He also slept through the night on his own downstairs.
Type of home –
Louie is an intelligent, young terrier who would benefit from an active home that can provide him with the stimulation and patience he requires, in turn, we think this little guy is destined to become a very loved and entertaining member of the family. He has a lot of energy and will need quality daily walks and excercise.
He could possibly live in a home with other calm, patient dogs with controlled introductions, but would need to be separated around resources and at meal times so may be better suited as the only dog in his new home.
For the same reasons, we think it best that any resident children are 16 years or older and dog-savvy, so that they know when to give him his space and can help out with walk times and stimulation.
Louie can jump high for a dog of his size so his new home would need secure boundaries to keep this little monkey from exploring the outside world unaccompanied.
Louie is house-trained and is fine being left at home for a couple of hours.
Adopting – Louie is currently housed at our kennels in Wells, Somerset and successful applicants will need to come and meet him here.
